Carpal bone instability occurs when the ligaments holding the scaphoid, lunate, and triquetrum together (the scapholunate (SL) and lunotriquetral (LT) ligaments) are torn, allowing these bones to shift out of alignment during wrist motion. Detecting this instability requires imaging the wrist while it moves, but free-hand motion inside the MRI bore often causes the wrist to drift out of the imaging plane, leading to difficulties in accurately quantifying carpal bone motion.
The guidance wrist movement device (GWMD) shown here constrains the volunteer's hand to a controlled radioulnar deviation path, locking the forearm, with the goal of keeping the wrist aligned within the imaging plane throughout the motion cycle.
